This image shows how each bell is rung full circle, the clapper striking the bell after having swung through 360 degrees. Control is effected by the ringer when the bell is "on the balance" at the top of each swing. When not being rung the bell is set with the stay resting on the slider. The Society of St Andrew's Chew Magna Bellringers The Society is responsible for Sunday Service ringing and special Festivals like Christmas and Easter, weddings if required and special occasions. Sunday service ringing takes place at 10.15am. Practices are held on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. At present the membership comprises eleven local people with ages ranging from 12 to 70 years. Church Bell Ringing, English style, is known as Change Ringing which was evolved in the early part of the 17th Century . Construction of methods has advanced significantly since the 17th century but it is quite remarkable that if a ringer of that time walked into one of our towers today he (or she) would have no difficulty in recognising the methods that we ring. Grandsire and Stedman, dating from 17C remain the most commonly rung methods in every tower today. It is a challenging hobby but which can be enjoyed at all levels of ability, involving team work, service for the church and the fellowship of ringers in the UK and around the world wherever bells are hung for ringing or hand bells are used. A group of Italian bell ringers, who of course chime in Italy, are regular visitors to this country and have learnt to handle our bells progressing into change ringing.
The ringers are members of the Bath & Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers, Chew Branch, which comprises towers mainly in the Chew Valley. Regular meetings and practices take place at member the towers and support is given to those teaching recruits. Special Training days are held for individual towers as required together with social activities. St Andrews Society is always looking for new recruits. The first step is to visit the tower and view the ringing taking place. Please see the previous page for contacts. |
